Gov. Andrew Cuomo has just proposed legislation to prevent employers in New York from asking how much an applicant has been paid in the past, according to Albany Business Review.

Employers often ask about salary history, and the legislation is meant to prevent women from getting paid less than men for the same work. Andrea Johnson of the National Women's Law Center told the Albany Business Review that the question itself essentially starts the salary negotiations for the job, and since women make less than men on average, the negotiations are anchored much lower. By eliminating the question about salary history, the state can move closer to equal pay.

Some states and cities have already put this law into effect, including New York City. Major companies like Google and Amazon have also followed suit.
