Correction: This article originally stated that Applebee's filed for bankruptcy in 2017. The brand and the TL Cannon franchise that operates the Woodbury Common Premium Outlets location have never filed for bankruptcy. RMH Franchise, the then-largest operator of Applebee's restaurants, filed for bankruptcy in May 2017. Townsquare Media of the Hudson Valley regrets the error. In addition, TL Cannon is the second largest Applebee's franchise, not the largest.

Applebees is closing another one of their restaurants, and this time it's in the Hudson Valley.

In 2017 Applebee's closed 99 locations and last year, they shuttered an additional 80 of their restaurants across the country, with its second largest franchisee eventually filing for bankruptcy in May, according to restaurantbusinessonline.com. Since then, the business has reorganized in an attempt to turn the struggling restaurant chain around. But now it looks like they will be closing at least one more local Applebee's this summer.

According to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notice filed with New York State, an Orange County Applebee's will be laying off 55 workers and closing their doors in July. The restaurant chain's location at Woodbury Common Premium Outlets is being shut down due to "economic reasons" on July 16, according to the company's filing.

In response to our reporting, Applebee's has disputed the information contained in the WARN notice. They say the reason for closing is because their lease has not been renewed. A statement from Stephanie Griffin, Director of Marketing & Public Relations for Applebee's reads,

Applebee’s Neighborhood Grill & Bar and our team members have enjoyed 20+ years serving shoppers and the surrounding neighborhood at our restaurant location in Woodbury Common Premium Outlets.  Our closure in July is strictly due to non-renewal of our lease at the mall and for no other reason.  Our team members and managers will continue to work at this location through the closing date and all have been offered a position at our other Applebee’s locations in Hudson Valley including Newburgh, Wallkill, Kingston and Poughkeepsie.

Regardless of the reason for closing, Woodbury Common Premium Outlets confirmed that the restaurant would be shutting down in July. General Manager, David Mistretta, said on Thursday,

The Applebee's location at Woodbury Common Premium Outlets will close at the end of July. We are always looking for opportunities to elevate the customer experience on-site and look forward to welcoming a new and exciting eatery that will enhance the world-class fashion and food offerings available at the property. We are excited to announce this new addition in the near future.

The shopping mecca recently announced a major expansion including two hotels, a spa and a helipad.
