Local Cinco De Mayo Celebrations This Year
Today is Cinco de Mayo so you know what that means, the perfect excuse to drink margaritas all day!
First off, we should figure out why we celebrate this holiday, right? Even though we have plenty of reminders about Cinco de Mayo from TV commercials to grocery store ads it’s important to know the history behind it all before we let the festivities begin!
Cinco de Mayo represents the celebration of Mexico’s victory against the French at Battle of Puebla on this day, May 5 in 1862. As with any holiday, the celebration is different all over the world. In Mexico, the day is spent celebrating the victory in battle meanwhile in the US; we celebrate the Mexican culture itself. Honestly, I dig the celebration in Mexico too though, with festive dresses, a day filled with parades and food.
Luckily in the 1950s, Cinco de Mayo was made into a national holiday used to educate all about the Mexican culture and heritage. Did you know, this celebratory day actually translates to the "fifth of May”? I promise, I’m not making this into a history lesson but don’t you feel more educated already? Ha-ha. Let’s not get it twisted, Cinco de Mayo is NOT the Mexican Independence Day (Grito de Delores), that’s September 16!
Now that you know why we celebrate this holiday, it's time to get the party started! I’ve hooked you guys up with tons of places that I like, in the Hudson Valley to fully enjoy your favorite Mexican food and drinks for Cinco de Mayo!
