Senator John Bonacic announced this week, that he is going to retire at the end of his current senate term.  The term ends next year, 2018.  Bonacic is a republican from Mount Hope and is Senator for the 42nd District which includes parts of Delaware, Ulster, Orange and Sullivan Counties.

In an article written in the New Paltz Times, sites Bonacic says serving in the State Senate has been an honor. Bonacic says, “The twenty years I have spent in the Senate have been rewarding both personally and professionally, despite the frustrations that all of us experience in any career.  Twenty years, though, is enough.”

Bonacic first was elected to the Senate in 1998 and started in state government as an Assemblyman in 1990.  The Senator says some of his proudest accomplishments during his time at the Senate include passage of the Women’s Health and Wellness Act, which was passed during his first year in the Senate.  Also, keeping rural hospitals open and the law permitting game on non-Indian land.
